So in the end, after two weeks of blathering, COP26 turned into COPOUT26.
National state self-interest came before the future of planet earth.
The national governments representing 40% of the world’s population diluted the commitment to phase-out coal.
Now we will just “phase-down” coal – reduce in other words.
And how will we know this is happening – or not?
If by 2030 we determine that coal has not been reduced, no doubt some Government minister will say that it has reduced in real terms as a percentage of the population – or some other statistical fudge.
Just as the UK Government does on a daily basis.
What a wasted opportunity that was.
