📅 Thought for today:

‘Acceptance and tolerance and forgiveness, those are life-altering lessons.’

This.

Are we becoming less tolerant and forgiving?

I’m not sure, but it is easy to assume so when you read so much in social media about people shunning or disconnecting other people they disagree with; rejecting people who don’t fit their opinions of what is “right”.

I know I did it during the Brexit debates – I found some people’s opinions intolerable and shut them out. I’d like to think I’ve changed since then and will think twice about doing that again.

The mighty Irvin Yalom often speaks of “sitting with discomfort”. Increasingly I hear and read of people being so determined to eradicate any discomfort in their lives that they will shut out any sign of it.

Emotions don’t evaporate when we lock them inside – they need to be let out else they fester.

And learning to be more tolerant, accepting and forgiving, even of people we judge and say are “wrong”, is what will make the world a better place.

When you can distinguish between people and their behaviour, understand and be curious about this distinction, then the world we live in becomes clearer, brighter.

We can live our perfect lives in our ivory towers, but it isn’t real.
